Bios on Instructors
Tom Coulterman
Tom Coulterman has been coaching junior curling teams and instructing at novice and coaching clinics throughout Ontario for over 35 years, first for Curl Ontario, and now for the newly formed Northern Ontario Curling Association. He has coached at summertime "junior" curling camps in Ontario and Nova Scotia since 1993, and has worked at High Performance Camps for competitive curling teams since 1996. He has also been the "Team Leader" for the Canadian junior men's team at the World Junior Curling Championships since 1996. Tom was a high school science (mainly chemistry) teacher for the Algoma District School Board from 1967 until 1999. Now he enjoys spending his time golfing with his wife, Mary, fishing, visiting...and babysitting...his 2 grandchildren who live in Thunder Bay, and spending a lot of time at his main hobby which includes all aspects of curling. He and his wife, Mary, have 1 daughter, Tara, who is a very accomplished curler having won 5 provincial championships... cur2 Northern Ontario championships as a junior, and 3 Ontario championships as an adult woman curler. Tom was her coach for the first 4 of the championships. |
Bill Charlebois
Bill Charlebois has been coaching curling for over 30 years. In that time he has coached teams at 7 Junior Nationals, a Canada Winter Games, and a World University Games. He is also heavily involved in his own club, coaching and teaching all levels of club teams and individuals, and a member of the club’s Promotion Committee. Bill is a Level III Certified Instructor, a Learning Facilitator for the NOCA, and formerly with Curl Ontario. Bill spent 2 years as the National coach of the Netherlands. He has taught at Amethyst Summer Camp since its inception, and the last 4 years at the Trillium Camp. He is a Level V Official, and has recently been appointed as the Head Official for the NOCA. |
Danielle McLeod
Danielle McLeod began her curling career fifteen years ago when she took her first technical course. Five years later, she became a Provincial Course Conductor and is a ten-year veteran of Curl Ontario. Danielle is a CCA Certified Level 3 Coach and a Level 2 Official. As a former teacher of thirty years, her principals acknowledged her as being “an exemplary teacher”. She prides herself as a lifelong learner and during her teaching career, she continued to bring forth new ideas and initiatives to the classroom. Since her retirement in 2007, her enthusiasm for teaching and learning has now been transferred to the curling world. She and fellow instructor and husband, Wayne McLeod, enjoy golfing in the off-season and continue taking lessons to improve in this sport. |
Wayne McLeod
Wayne McLeod is a twenty-year veteran of Curl Ontario. Wayne is a CCA Certified Level 3 Coach and a Level 3 Official. He also is a retired teacher of over 30 years with a specialist in Special Education. He has worked at Trillium curling camp with partner Pat "B" Reid.
Wayne is married to fellow instructor Danielle McLeod. They both retired from teaching in 2007. In the off season, they enjoy golfing. Their favourite holiday trip is to Boyne Highlands "Gr8 Escape". |
Bruce Merklinger
Bruce is an experienced curler, coach and instructor. He has coached at the Canada Winter Games, twice at the Scott Tournament of Hearts, many times at the Ontario Bantams, Juniors and Ladies Provincials. This year Bruce coached a Bantam team that won the Ontario Bantam Championships and the Ontario Junior Curling Tour Championships. Bruce has coached and taught High Performance Camps in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Newfoundland. He has also coached at the Ontario Trillium Curling Camp. |
Alan Arkilander
Alan Arkilander is currently a practicing lawyer in Sudbury, Ontario. He is a Level 11 NCCP Certified Coach, with Level 111 Technical qualifications. He has actively coached Bantam, Junior, High School Boys’, Men’s and Mixed teams. He has been the Northern Ontario coach at the 2002 Brier, the 2004 National Junior Championships and the 2007 National Mixed Championship. As well he was the coach of the Lockerby Composite High School 2007 OFSAA Championship team. In 2003 he was the Northern Ontario recipient of the Pat “O.” Reid Coaching Award.
Alan has curled for over 30 years at the club level and was on the 2007 Northern Ontario Senior Men’s Championship team. In the past he has been an executive member of the “old” NOCA, serving as the Chair of Junior Curling from 2002 to 2007. Alan has also served as the Curl Ontario Regional Business Assistant – North, from 2005 to 2008. Presently he is a Director for Region 5 on the Board of the NOCA.
Alan is married to Joan, who introduced him to curling in 1978. Other than curling he has a passion for fishing and gardening. They have two children, who are both active curlers and have coaching credentials, having worked with the Junior/Little Rock Program at the KW Granite Curling Club in Waterloo. Their son, Paul, has recently graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University, where his team won the 2006 and 2008 OUA Championship, as well as the 2009 OUUA Silver Medal. In addition his team won the 2008 CIS/CCA National University Curling Championship and represented Canada at the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China. |
Carl Rennick
Carl Rennick is a CCA Level III Certified Coach. He has been a member of the Curl Ontario Course Conductor Team since 1994. He and his instructor peers deliver the Level I and Level II Technical courses across the province. Carl has coached junior teams in various locations. Of late, he is very much involved with Wheelchair Curling in Ontario. Carl is also a certified Level II Official. Carl has retired to the Kawartha Lakes Region and has taken up both motorcycles and the trumpet. He is married to Lynda. Together they both enjoy their four grandchildren at every opportunity. |
